As a subdivision of the Department of Art Fundamentals, the Painting Studio was established in 1995. But the character of the painterly tradition the Painting Studio continues to draw upon comes from the pre-war Kaunas Art School, founded in 1922.
The KAF Painting Studio fosters coloristic tradition of Lithuanian painting, form and space modeling, and painting from life skills. These key landmarks play a decisive role in student training in the first 3 years. In the 4th year, and especially in the Masters Program, students are encouraged to combine traditional and experimental painting techniques, develop a conceptual view toward painting and be acquainted with the latest tendencies in plastic arts. To attain diversity in student education, the Studio invites artists from other higher education art schools. Martinš Krūminš, a Latvian Academy of Arts instructor, has been teaching in KAF already for several years.
Summer practice in various Lithuanian towns and villages is an important part in painting education because there students get excellent possibilities of training their plein-air painting skills and gather materials for their future projects. In 1999 summer practice was organized in Seda, Mažeikiai District, in 2000 in the Pažaislis Monastery near Kaunas, in 2001 in the Rumšiškės Open-Air Ethnographic Museum, in 2002 in the Panemunė Castle, Jurbarkas District. KAF Painting Studio instructors and students are among the most active Lithuanian art scene participants, who take part in numerous exhibitions and often organize art events themselves. Although so far only several generations of students have graduated from the painting programs in KAF, many of them have already made themselves known in the art life of the country.
