Department of Humanities
Studies of the humanities and social sciences are an inseparable part in artist or architect training, as they provide students with university-type education and broaden possibilities of applying their knowledge and skills in their professional careers. The Department of Humanities provides instruction on such subjects as art history and theory, philosophy, art sociology, art management, and foreign languages. The Department regards education in these areas as indispensable for a contemporary artist because it helps the individual to distinguish his/her creative credo or conceptual stance. Just like the whole Kaunas Art Faculty, the Department of Humanities seeks to educate a well-rounded personality who grounds his/her views and actions on the principles of transcultural ethics and tolerance. In the Bachelor's programs, KAF students take a series of chronological art history surveys that help to reveal the specificities of art and architecture in various periods and regions. The Department has facilities and equipment to use in the class a variety of visual materials that includes slides, transparences, reproductions, and videotapes. Students' conceptual and critical thinking is trained in aesthetics and philosophy courses. These disciplines play an especially important role in Master's programs where graduate students are required to demonstrate adequate understanding of cultural processes and contemporary art developments. Art sociology and management courses strengthen students’ understanding about art market processes and the role of art in contemporary society. During foreign languages tutorials students analyze texts and expand professional vocabulary on fine arts. Faculty members of the Department take active part in serving as advisors for Master’s degree research projects. They also often initiate conferences and panel discussions, and participate in organization and critical assessment of exhibitions by KAF students and instructors.
