![]() The origins of professional printmaking education in Kaunas reach back to 1926 when an applied graphics studio was launched in Kaunas Art School, the pioneering Lithuanian institution of professional art training at the time. The Applied Graphic Studio was opened in 1992 as a part of the KAI Design Department. Professional graphic skills are necessary in a wide array of fields. Graphic artists work in publishing companies, advertising agencies, and graphic design firms. The types of activities they often undertake include package designing, book illustration, comics production, creating designs for interiors, open environments, TV shows, web sites, etc. Of course, many of them practice printmaking too. The KAF Department of Graphic holds a view that the success in using graphic design to utilitarian purposes largely depends on the skills and knowledge acquired in graphics as a fine art. Thus students are urged not only to learn various ways of practical application of their skills but also to develop their individual mode of expression and their standpoint as artists. Strong printmaking traditions in Kaunas city create good conditions for students to learn the subtleties of printmaking in communicating and working with acknowledged printmakers themselves. In the Faculty the students learn various traditional and contemporary printmaking techniques, acquire skills for controlling the printmaking process, and get acquainted with possibilities of using prints in visual communication as well as with the genre of artist˙s book. By acquiring knowledge in publishing graphics field students prepare for careers in publishing business. Students learn to integrate the content of publication with visual elements and acquire practical knowledge on publication ergonomics, paper folding sizes used in printing, paper characteristics, publication typesets, cover and illustration design, modular grid, preparation of a publication for printing, and other publication aspects. Students are taught to produce 2D and 3D graphic design objects, and to create and use various symbols, logos, heraldry, and typesets. Students divide their time for mastering both traditional graphic techniques and digital technologies. The Department of Graphic has equipment for intaglio and relief printing, which allow to produce prints using etching, drypoint, lithography, soft ground, mezzotint, reservage, monotype, linocut, woodcut, and experimental techniques. The students also learn professional graphic software: CorelDRAW, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Dreamweaver and others. The Department of Graphic offers Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree Programs.
