Glass Studio
The Glass Design Program was established in Kaunas Art Institute in 1979. The Department offers Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in glass design. The KAF Glass Design Program is unique in Lithuania. Kaunas Art Faculty is the only institution in the country to have technological equipment for glass processing, a comprehensive program for training glass designers, and a faculty of professional glass artists and technologists. The glass design study process is based on gradual mastering of various glass processing technologies that allow students to produce diverse glass design objects and pieces of fine art. The study program involves practical training in both cold (cutting, polishing, matting, and gluing) and hot (casting, blowing, fusing) glass treatment processes. The character of Bachelor’s and Master’s diploma works largely depends on individual choice of the student. Most diploma projects focus on glass sculpture, glass objects, and interior glass (chandeliers, panels, dividing walls, stained glass). Students develop their practical skills in the KAF glass workshops. The Faculty has glass smelting, casting, fusing, and stained glass kilns as well as glass cutting, matting, polishing, and grinding equipment. The KAF glass design instructors represent the most renown and productive generation of Lithuanian glass artists. Almost all of them were educated in Kaunas Art Institute. However, with intent to broaden understanding in glass aesthetics and technologies, the Faculty regularly invites visiting artists from abroad. The glass designers Marvin Lipofsky and Mark Eckstrand (both from the US) conducted short courses and training workshops at the Faculty. The Glass Department instructors and students often exchange experience and participate in joint exhibitions with their colleagues from Baltic and Nordic art schools.
