Having taken a large step from utilitarian application towards a synthesis of form and content, the contemporary ceramics is consistently entering the general developments of the contemporary art. Beside traditional materials, plastic, silicon, concrete and many other materials are being applied in the creative work, and various installations and objets dÿart are being created.
By teaching various module subjects, Chair of Applied Ceramics of Vilnius Art Academy Kaunas Art Faculty (VAAKAF) is seeking to systematically and emphatically respond to the ongoing processes in art without restraining itself to the observation of phenomena in the local context, but rather following the creative process of foreign artists and the general international trends of art in a systematical way. Analysis of cultural and social phenomena allows the development and application of multilateral study programs while seeking to educate and prepare competitively competent young artists who are able to work at the level of a professional within a given technology and to implement their ideas. The technical basis and the materials necessary for the work of a ceramics artist which are present at the Chair give the students a possibility to systematically improve their skills. An exceptional stage of the studies is their work with an extremely precious and noble material, fine bone china.
The Chair of Applied Ceramics strives to develop students who would take over the knowledge and experience of the tutors, and, after graduating, would become active participants of the spread of the art of ceramics and of the art processes in general. That is why, the essential objective of VAAKAF Chair of Applied Ceramics is to provide a balanced universe of theoretical and practical knowledge contextualized with the contemporary processes of art when tutoring higher education art graduates.
Tutors in the Chair of applied ceramics are active organizers and participants of various projects, exhibitions and symposia (e.g. International fine bone china symposium IDEA), competitions (European Ceramics competition in Bornholm, Denmark) and many other events. One of the key objectives of the teaching staff of the Chair is the systematic strife to involve students into participation in the activity of international projects, exhibitions, symposia and creative practices. When holding annual exhibitions of stunt works, the Chair seeks to systematically develop the skills of the future artists by developing their essential aesthetic attitudes.
Conceptual, visual and applied aspects intermingle in the course of studies. The study process is oriented towards original, unique thinking, ability to master spaces and create authentic works of art. When performing individual tasks, students are to look for their creative ´I¡ and professional, technologically precise execution of the creative work. The Chair of Applied ceramics has BA and MA study programs.
In the VAAKAF ceramics BA program, Professional mastery level is manifeste, and acquisition of technological processes is being targeted. The technical trend of tutoring is oriented towards the higher level of cognitive and creative development and towards critical, analysis-oriented attitude by involving students into project management.
Bachelor programs contain potential possibilities to ensure further development and improvement.
VAAKAF ceramics MA program exhibits a high level of professional mastery, and emphasis is laid upon high levels of technology acquisition. The development of the higher levels of cognition takes place together with conceptual and creative skills and critical, analysis-oriented attitudes, by involving into team work, gaining experience in commerce and business. Theoretical studies are broadened with practice grounded upon marketing analysis, exploration of the processes of manufacturing and production, analysis of materials and processes. The Chair participates in the processes of international cooperation and student exchange. It widely employs its inherent experience.
