 Established in 1988, the Department of Art Fundamentals organizes and conducts the curricula of basic disciplines of visual arts. The Department consists of the four studios: Painting, Sculpture, Drawing, and Interdisciplinary Arts. Two of them the studios of Painting and Sculpture have their own academic programs and confer undergraduate and graduate degrees in these fields. Faculty members of the Department are professional painters, sculptors and other visual artists. The mission of the Department of Art Fundamentals is to provide instruction for all KAF students on basic art disciplines: drawing, painting, and sculpture. The content of practical training in these disciplines is modified depending on the specific study program of the student. Experience in drawing, painting, sculpture, and composition helps undergraduate students to better comprehend the principal features of rendering color, line, form and space, which later enables them to use more effectively various ways of artistic expression and modeling in their specific fields.
In the Masters level of study, assignments in fundamental art disciplines are very much individualized and appropriated to the specificity of a particular graduate project. The Department of Art Fundamentals maintains cooperation contacts with the Latvian Academy of Art. In collaboration with colleagues from Riga, the Department organized in 2001 an international conference Drawing in Contemporary Study Process. The best students works are stored in the methodic archive of the Department and widely used in the study process as educational examples. The Department also regularly selects works from the archive to organize methodic and conceptual exhibitions.
